Eastern Front, Ukraine-

Germany launches an offensive on Rostov, at the mouth of the Don River. The Soviet Ninth Army's deep and flexible defensive lines, together with the winter weather, obstruct the encirclement. A frontal assault from the coast on the 17th is then counterbalanced by the Soviet Thirty-seventh Army's attack north of the city. The Germans capture Rostov on the 21st but the Soviets recapture it within eight days. General Gerd von Runstedt then resigns after defying Hitler's orders concerning a tactical withdrawal from the city.

The Fate of Partisans News by SuperTed @ 14:37

Here is a quote from "Communist Guerilla Warfare," by Dixon and Heilbrunn:

"The Stephanus directive, issued on the 15th December, 1941, under the heading 'Memorandum on Use of Troops against Partisan,' reads in part as follows:

'Treatment of partisans:
(a) Partisans captured in action will be interrogated and then shot (former members of the Red Army) or hanged (civilians)...
(b) Partisans who are caught will be hanged without exception. A label will be attached to them with the following legend: "This is a partisan who did not give himself up!"...'"

Balkans, Greece-

Italy issues an ultimatum to Greece demanding the right to occupy the country for the war's duration. Before the ultimatum expires, eight divisions, led by General Sabasiano Visconti-Prasca, attack from Albania. Italy hopes for a rapid advance to rival Germany's conquests, but mountainous terrain and the absence of maps for commanders hamper the invasion. The winter weather limits air support and thousands die of cold. Greek forces, under General Alexander Papagos, the commander-in-chief, mount stiff resistance.

New Combat Mission Website and Mods Now Available! News by SuperTed @ 15:56

Big news from The Wargamer:

"The Wargamer, with the technical and graphical miracles by Rafal Jakubowicz, the project management of Tim Maushardt, and the wonderful talent and energy of mod and add-on maker Mike Thompson and his team, has completely overhauled our long-neglected Combat Mission site.

Now visitors will be able to download mods and scenarios for those mods, all created by Mike Thompson and his dedicated team. These unofficial mods are both graphical and technical modifications that enhance the original, already excellent Combat Mission game by introducing two additional World War II theaters of operation to the original game. Install them to experience new sounds, terrain, vehicles, and graphical interface enhancements that breathe a new life into your copy of the game (which is required and is available via Battlefront.com).

Mike Thompson and his team originally tackled the North African Theater with the release of the mod "Desert Fox Desert Rats." The team has continued their work with "Fading Hopes," allowing players to experience the Blitzkrieg-era of 1939 Poland and 1940 France. Then came the muddy steppes of Russia with the mod "Frontovik." Currently the team is transforming the game to accommodate the island-hopping Pacific Theater with "War at the Rim, Those Forgotten Bastards."

Each mod is complete with infantry and vehicle bmp changes and carefully chosen and designed scenarios aimed to enhance your gaming experience. Simply place the associated files into either the bmp, wav, or scenario folders in your game folder and let your new Combat Mission Beyond Overlord Mods take you to new and exciting fronts.

(As with any mod, be sure to back up your original files and neither Wargamer.com nor Battlefront.com can or will be responsible for any unforeseen consequences of using these unofficial modifications and they are provided entirely "as is," with no implied or specific guarantees as to performance or results. Yes, our lawyers made us say that.)

We think the Combat Mission World Mods website has been a truly world class effort with people working on them from around the world. Mike Thompson wishes to thank those that worked on this effort with him, Battlefront.com for making the effort possible in the first place, and the dedication and hard work of all involved.

We hope that you enjoy the mods and the scenarios at least as much as we enjoyed creating them for you.

October 19, 1941

Eastern Front, Soviet Union-

Joseph Stalin declares a state of siege in Moscow. The Soviet Union is now in the process of mounting an enormous defensive operation. Reinforcements are arriving from northern and southern regions, and a formidable series of defensive lines are now being built by Moscow's citizens, who are also ready to fight in them. General Georgi Zhukov is to command the West Front responsible for defending Moscow.
Across the entire Eastern Front the Soviets are preparing strong defensive positions and mobilizing the entire population to support the war. Soviet resistance is fierce, and atrocities become commonplace on both sides. Agricultural and industrial resources are destroyed if they cannot be prevented from falling into German hands - a deliberate scorched earth policy.

Long Awaited v1.6 MCM3 Released! News by Madmatt @ 11:54

Been nearly a year since the Combat Mission Mac Mod Manager was released by Aikidorat and he has seen fit to treat the Mac Mod Slut Community with an updated version now sporting these enhancements, among others:

* Winter graphics are now split between Graphics 10, 11 and 13. I split them according to the files in Graphics 4, 5, and 8. The bmp mapping information in the program reflects this change

*Runs under OSX, but the buttons are ugly.

* Runs much faster now. Conversion times have been reduced by some code cleaning I did, and a general speed up of Realbasic.

* Includes file typer programs (not my own) to help if MCM3 does not
recognize PC bmps.

Sounds great, head on over and give it a whirl!

Soviet Bombers over Berlin News by SuperTed @ 20:39

Everyone has heard of the great American, British and Canadian bomber stream that pounded Germany from the air during World War 2. These bombers are often credited with winning the war by destroying German industry and demoralizing the population. Indeed, the bombers of the western Allies did wreak havoc in Germany by day and night, but not too many people know that the Russians too had a strategic bombing campaign over Germany, and these raids were as terrible as any the British or Americans could construe...

A New Kind of War News by SuperTed @ 20:45

To whet your appetite for CMBB, here is an excerpt from "Development and Employment of Soviet Armor Tactics Prior to and During the Great Patriotic War:"

"...Stalin, believing that reports of invasion were faulty, misconstrued, or a misunderstanding, went so far as to order Russian soldiers not to fire upon their German "allies". Even after the order had been countermanded, and the Germans met resistance, the Wermacht easily rolled across western Russia. The initial German success, though partially due to complete operational surprise, is largely contributable to Germany’s early superiority in the field of armored warfare. The battle hardened and experienced Panzer force, over three and a half thousand strong, overwhelmed and annihilated the weak Soviet armored force, and displayed general dominance over the Red Army. The Soviets, realizing that effective tank warfare would be essential to slow, let alone stop the Germans, began emphasizing and overhauling armor strategy, tactics, and operations. The stressing of armor, the high quality of Russian tanks, and the eventual skill of the Soviet armored force were perhaps the greatest factors that contributed to Germany's defeat..."

"We have a couple of new mods for you today. First off we have a great new Winter Tiger by Scipio. Next, we have some awesome new explosion graphics sent in by Juju. Thanks to both these guys for producing and taking the time to submit them.

And finally -- Franko's Back! After taking some time out to have his first-born (many congratulations Franko!), he returns with two brand new scenarios from his "Rendezvous with Destiny" series. "Cole's Charge" and "Cassidy's Crisis" both see the brave men of the 502nd PIR, 101st Airborne Div desperately and heroically locked in a heavy slugging match with their Fallschirmjager adversaries.

Franko has also been busy revising his "True Combat: The Only Way To Wage War" document, which he has now made even more "hardcore." :-)

Also, I have just discovered loads of old, unread e-mails, full of mods/scenarios that I had redirected to another account when I was having server troubles a few months back. I had lost the settings/password to be able retrieve them, but I just found the missing info I needed today.
