At a press conference Japanese Premiere Suzuki gives a confusing response to the Potsdam Declaration. The Allies' translation seems to indicate his unwillingness to take any notice of the demand, but could also be interpreted as meaning that he wished to make no comment at this time.

The king of Italy relieves Benito Mussolini of his office. Mussolini is arrested and Marshal Pietro Badoglio forms a new government that lasts only six weeks. The government deters Germany from occupying the entire country by promising to fight on. Badoglio hopes, however, that the Allies will land and occupy most of Italy quickly and therefore confine any fighting to the north.

Germany's Army Geoup North halts west of Lake Ilmen, south of the city of Leningrad. Troops and equipment along the entire front are suffering from the rigors of the advance and stronger Soviet resistance. During such rest periods the Soviets reinforce their lines, especially those in front of Moscow and Leningrad. The resources needed to take these two cities will be immense.

US battleships begin the pre-invasion bombardment of Asan and Agat beaches on Guam, the most important island in the Marianas group. Two days later, troops of the 3rd Marine Division and 77th Infantry Division begin landing on the island. The Japanese fight back hard.

The world's first atomic bomb is exploded at Alamogordo, New Mexico. The secret work to develop the weapon is code-named the Manhattan Project. A specialized bomber unit, the 509th Composite Group, is training to attack Japan with atomic bombs.

War leader Shigenori Togo instructs the Japanese ambassador in Moscow to inform the authorities that the emperor wants the war to cease. To this end, Prince Konoye is to be sent as a special envoy to the Soviet Union, with authority from the emperor to discuss Soviet and Japanese relations, including the future of Japanese-occupied Manchuria. However, Togo has repeatedly stressed that the Allied demand for unconditional surrender leaves his government with no choice but to continue fighting.
    Indeed, the Allies are laying plans to invade the Japanese mainland. It is proposed that the first landings, code-named Operation Olympic, will take place in November. The second, Operation Coronet, is scheduled for March 1946. The US planners expect to suffer severe casualties. However, neither operation will take place.

Sea War, Mediterranean-

At the Battle of Punta Stilo, the British Mediterranean Fleet tries to separate the Italian Fleet from its base in Taranto in southern Italy. An Italian battleship and cruiser suffer damage, and Italian aircraft hit a British cruiser. On the 19th, the Australian light cruiser Sydney and four destroyers engage two Italian light cruisers. The Italians lose a cruiser and the Sydney is damaged.

Have we got a CMMOS update for you! 44 mods, Commonwealth vehicles (summer and winter), German vehicles and guns (summer and winter), German uniforms, and more terrain than you can shake a stick at (sorry, the stick mods were unavailable as we went to press).

Let's just dig a little deeper and see what we've got.

Terrain: new pine trees for the Abominable Snow mod, a new road for Tom's Battle of the Bulge mod, a fix to repair a blemish in DD's scattered tree bases and a whole passel of new Ed Kinney mods covering brush, hedge, wall, woods bases, scattered tree bases and grass.

Commonwealth Vehicles: Andrew Fox's Cromwell, Marco Bergman's
M10/M36/Wolverine/Achilles, and Gordon Molek's Challenger.

The Japanese strongpoint at Mumbo, 10 miles (16 km) inland from Salamaua, is seized by the Australians. US and Australian forces are battling to dislodge the Japanese from the high ground they have retreated to. Allied reinforcements are to be landed in order to clear the Japanese from northeast New Guinea.

Increasing numbers of German troops reinforce the Kursk offensive but the Red Army stands firm. The Soviets counter the Germans with a deep defensive network while heavily-armed antitank units deliver concentrated fire against German armor. The Soviets quickly gain air superiority and fighters provide valuable tactical support. These measures combine to prevent the German attacks penetrating the Soviet defenses.

Eastern Front, Baltic-

The Red Army offensive to clear the Baltic States begins. Three Soviet Fronts - 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Baltic - are to be used. The Baltic States are of major importance to Germany, as they are a major source of food and enable the Germans to blockade the Russian fleet and keep supply lanes to Sweden and Finland open.

Sea War, Mediterranean-

Britain, fearing that France's navy will be siezed by Germany, sends two battleships, a battlecruiser, and a carrier (Force H) to neutralize French vessels at Oran and Mers-el-Kebir, Algeria. After negotiations fail, the British sink one battleship and damage two. In Britain, two French battleships, nine destroyers, and other craft are acquired with minimal force. French naval forces in Alexandria, Egypt, are disarmed on the 7th.

Eastern Front, Soviet Union-

While Hoepner's Fourth Panzer Group makes good progress beyond the river Dvina, farther south German Eleventh Army links up with Romanian Third and Fourth Armies for significant advances. The wet and boggy conditions they are facing are hampering the Germans elsewhere, with commanders reporting it as the only cause for lack of advance.
