109 Gustav has more of the good stuff:

"Five unique mods today!

Somebody needs to get the coffee away from Tanks a Lot, because he's been working overtime. Tank's newest creations are a good rocky rough, summer and winter stone walls, a summer version of his last church mod, and a water and ford combination for all those $20 boats.

Bfamily has been busy as well. His newest creation is a King Kitty in a brown, tan, and green camo, either ambush or plain.

Some bad news: a lot of people have been unable to download several mods. I'm not sure why, but I'm going to have to move The Last Defense to a different server in order to get them working again. If you get an error when you try to download, or if the download stops halfway, I know about this problem and am working on it. If you know of free website hosting with at least 50 meg accounts, please tell me
about it."

Eastern Front, Finland-

A Soviet force of over 600,000 men, backed by air and naval power, attacks Finland in support of Otto Kuusinen's newly-proclaimed Finnish People's Government, which is sponsored by the Soviet Union. As aircraft bomb the capital, Helsinki, Field Marshal Karl von Mannerheim leads the nation's defense with a mainly reservist force, inferior in both numbers and arms. The main Soviet thrust through the Karelian Isthmus is obstructed by the Mannerheim Line, a 1914-18 system of fortifications that runs through rugged terrain and forest.
Other Soviet forces attack eastern and northern Finland, and also launch failed amphibious assaults on the southern coast. As the campaign progresses, highly-motivated Finnish troops exploit their familiarity with the terrain and use their ability to ski through snow-covered areas to launch hit-and-run raids on Red Army units bogged down by the weather.

A Little Help from My Friends... News by SuperTed @ 20:15

An excerpt from a site that focuses on the Romanian army in WWII:

"At the end of July 1941, in support of the German 11th Army, the 4th Romanian Army was ordered to resume operations east of the Dniester River and to take the city of Odessa, an important port at the Black Sea and communication centre in the south of Ukraine. The plans and unfolding of military actions belonged entirely to Romanian Command. At Odessa the enemy had forces to the sum of 7-8 big units, with some 150,000 men. The Romanian Army committed to this operation 340,223 military, thus having a permanent numerical advantage. It was an expensive victory for the Romanian troops. In the seventy days of fierce fighting, the losses were no less than 90,020 military. The Soviet losses were also high. For the stiff resistance of the Red Army troops, also supported by civilians, the Soviet government awarded the city of Odessa the title of "hero city," which was awarded only to three other Russian cities: Moscow; Stalingrad; and Leningrad."

CMHQ Exclusive! Updated CMBB FAQ News by Madmatt @ 15:53

Recently I asked Jason Barnes (Of CMBO FAQ fame) to send in a list of FAQ style questions regarding CMBB and the answers are in!

Questions for the UP-dated CMBB FAQ:

Units:

Will we have on-board artillery?
If you mean artillery batteries then no, the scale of CMBB, which still focuses on tactical engagements, would mean on-map artillery batteries is out of scale. As with CMBO, there will be individual artillery pieces in the Support Unit list that cover a broad spectrum of gun, cannon and howitzer types that can be deployed on map.

Will mortar vehicles still require LOS to fire?
They can now gain spotting through an HQ unit like normal mortar teams

Terrain:

What new terrain tiles are there? And what different affects on units?
Cemeteries
Fences
Soft Ground
Rocky
Open Steppe
‘Build Your Own’ Factory complexes
Peasant Shacks

How will rubble be modified - specifically damaged and ruined buildings?
We are keeping this a secret for now, but we think you will be very pleased on how we have modified rubble. ;-)

Will fires be modeled differently? Will fires spread?
Yes, fires can now start small and grow bigger so there's a
lapse of time between when the fire starts and when it's a major blaze
which units cannot pass through.

Will water be treated differently? (Streams?)
Due to the new variety of weather, water and ice will be getting an enhanced treatment. Streams are not modeled as they are too small of a terrain feature however we do have a new “soft ground” texture which models irregular and somewhat water logged terrain regardless of the overall ground condition.

Will there be new weather affects?
There are many environmental enhancements including, separate Dawn and Dusk settings, wind strength and direction, various temperatures, and blizzards. We have also added a new EXTREME setting for display of rain, snow and other graphic effects to enhance the look of the game.

Are there any other tweaks being made to quickbattles, such as victory location placement and map size and shape? (Long maps instead of wide)
There are many tweaks including allowing a RANDOM setting for almost every parameter. All new parameters and now maps are better shaped and allow a new HUGE setting.

Gameplay:

How will artillery be modeled differently? Will we be able to specify a) number of rounds fired?, b) pattern of strike area?, c) rolling barrages?
Artillery now has more realistic fire delays based on the formation the artillery is attached to. A Battalion asset will have a much smaller delay than an Army or Corps asset. For Soviets, that means they get access to some very heavy artillery support but it comes at the penalty of very long delays. This is offset by the addition of Prep Barrages for both sides.
Prep Barrages allow a Zero Time Delay barrage if the FO plots the barrage on the first turn of the battle. This represents coordination between the battery and FO prior the battle. This zero delay barrage MUST be plotted on turn one. If a player waits to turn 2 he loses that bonus and will get the normal delay associated with the battery type (in some cases those delays could be longer than the battle itself!)

A Prep Barrage Target is plotted as normal, it does not need to be within LOS of the FO but it will be a more accurate pattern if it is.

The barrage itself will begin to fall almost immediately at the beginning of turn one and will continue until the FO re-targets the barrage, stops the barrage or the battery runs out of ammo.

And YES the enemy TacAI can and will call in Prep Barrages and they can really really hurt!

Will units be able to specify whether they only fire at hard or soft targets?
There is a new function called Cover Arc that will do this. Basically there are two cover arcs commands available. Cover Arc for all units and Cover Armor Arc for anti-tank capable units. The CA command replaces the older AMBUSH command. Cover Arc ordered units will engage pretty much any enemy that enters the arc and Armor Cover Arc is limited to engaging armored vehicles

Now a user definable wedge of the map can be designated that will focus a unit’s attention and targeting bias. The arc can be unlimited in range and up to 180 degrees wide. Units in CinC will be more rigid and focused and will not be as likely to engage units out of their cover arc or of a different unit type. Cover Arc’s also have the added effect of giving turreted units an effective “rotate turret” command. For turreted vehicles they will also now retain turret facing even while on the move so you can move them out with the turret off center, continuing covering a specified direction.

More on this will be forthcoming.

Will winter be handled differently, specifically drastic cold, ice, storms and difficulty in carrying out actions in these conditions?
Yes, we have new weather conditions, types and temperatures that will all affect combat operations.

Graphics:

How many more polygons will the vehicles have? Is there a big difference in looks?
Everything graphically in the game is being enhanced. Simple as that.

Miscellaneous:

Oh yeah, how about some more info on the "Command" factor in tanks? Will there be a command tank, and will it be a non-gunned befelswagen or just another tank?
When tanks are purchased (or setup by designer) to be in platoons there will be a HQ tank. The tank will be fully armed. When individual tanks of a platoon either lose their HQ tank or wander to far from the HQ they will be penalized with higher delays and less rigid Cover Arcs.

And last, and hopefully least, will it run on WinXP?
Yes.
We are also well aware of the current XP/nVidia graphics issue and are working with nVidia to resolve this problem as well as taking steps on our end to try and reduce/eliminate the issues all together. Current testing on XP/nVidia platforms has been very encouraging and corruption has been all but eliminated in-game.

Extra Bones!

There many new commands for both movement and combat including:
Move to Contact
Seek Hull Down
Advance
Assault
Sneak (uses all new behavior over older command)
Human Wave
Shoot and Scoot
And more!

The entire Command and Control system has been overhauled for all units. Too much so to go into detail in this FAQ. Literally, every facet of command and unit behavior has been tweaked and overhauled. Much more than most people would have thought possible! ;-)

Battles are much less compressed than before and have a more natural flow to them. This has been accomplished due to a combination of the new tactical tools available to the player as well as more realistic associated unit behaviors, TacAi, unit fitness and a newly implemented fatigue model.

The new Casualty option available in the QB parameters also adds a thrilling new game element. Some of the testers have taken to calling it the “Game Before The Game”.

The setting is chosen as a Percentage of Casualties to be dealt out to either side (they have separate settings) prior to the battle commencing.

Basically the computer will add the % you select to your total force allotment and then selectively delete men, machines and entire units to get back to the original point amount. For example, if you want a 20% deleted force and choose to make the game a 1000 point battle, you would actually have about 1250 points to buy units.

Once you (or the autopurchaser) bought your units it would then go
through and delete enough stuff to get you back down to 1000 points. Be advised there is no limit to what you *could* loose including that costly FO or Fighter-Bomber, or a particularly expensive tank platoon.

The computer also uses logic in deleting units. It wont delete a King Tiger, for example, if it only needed to reduce your force total by another 10 points.

That’s why its called the Game before the Game, care must be taken to use the “extra” points granted to you with the understanding that there are no guarantees of what you will end up with. This has the effect of awarding the player who chooses a coordinated force while potentially penalizing a player that depends on victory being delivered by one or two specific units.

Here is an excerpt from an online article on Soviet aerosleds:

"The Red Army had several aerosled detachments that were employed with relative success in winter operations against the Finns during the Winter War. They were used primarily for maintaining communications between units and formations, and ferrying ammunition, provisions, and petroleum products to forces operating at great distances from their supply bases. These sleds also evacuated the wounded from the battlefield. Sometimes aerosled detachments executed combat missions; launching surprise attacks against the enemy. All this taken together was a first test case. The Soviet leadership had only recently come to recognize the possibilities of the aerosled as a combat asset."

It's about time we had a CMHQ update! News by Manx @ 20:01

Things are slowly beginning to take shape here at CMHQ after we have spent the past couple of weeks getting ourselves organized, and while i get myself acquainted with CMHQ's server setup. I gotta hand it to the 'Mad-One' - he keeps a tidy file system here and it's made my job so much easier figuring out how the site is structured.

We have now finished the transfer of all the mods from COMBAT MISSIONS to CMHQ that weren't duplicated - if you look across to the menu on your left, you will see a link to the temporary CMS mod pages. I hope to be able to port all the scenario and operation files over within the next week, and once this is done, work will start in earnest on completely redesigning the entire site.

Lastly, and since it's my first post: i would like to thank both Matt and Ted for the welcome and help they have given me since i arrived, and i look forward to a long and successful partnership with them here at the HQ.

More Kudos for Combat Mission! News by SuperTed @ 17:58

On November 1, GameCaptain, a German-language website dedicated to reviewing computer games, did a review of Combat Mission: Beyond Overlord. Since the review was done in German, I enlisted the help of two volunteers to translate it to English. That translation is below. The reviewer was mistaken in some of the details of the game, so my clarifications are in parentheses. If you would like to read the original German-language review, click the link below.

Translation by Peter Tilbury, with additional contributions from Juju.

"Apart from among the hard core strategy fraternity of “grognards,“ Combat Mission: Beyond Overlord has failed to cause much of a stir. Why otherwise did the localisation of the English version, which appeared in June 2000, take so long? A contributory factor is also likely to have been the prejudgement of turn-based strategy games as being dead boring and dull.

The Good Old Days

The true fun of playing such games is not in the speed of play or in the eye-candy but in the depth of play. Then at the end of the day playing a game of chess also takes its time. The game play in Combat Mission takes you back to the old Battle Isle days. The individual turns are subdivided into an order and action phase. During the order phase the player can give orders to the troops under his command such as run there, shoot at that, take cover etc. The action phase lasts 60 seconds of real time. During this phase the player can take a keen interest in his troops as they go about executing his commands. Should the player have missed some of the action as it unfolded during the phase, he is able to “turn back” the clock to the beginning of the phase for a rerun so that he can analyse the battle in all its detail.

On the Western Front

Combat Mission does not offer a storyline, but rather a collection of missions and operations which draw their inspiration from historical events based on the period between “D-Day,“ the invasion of Normandy, and the end of the war. The missions span the famous “Arnhem bridgehead” to the task of clearing skirmishers from a wood. The lack of a storyline is more than compensated for by the guaranteed longevity of game enjoyment. There are seven operations covering a total of forty missions. These are additionally augmented by forty stand-alone missions and a "Quick-Battle-Tool," which, with the aid of a randomiser, can be used to generate battle scenarios. If that is not already enough, the player can play all the missions from the opposing side. And should the player actually manage to carry the day on all the maps, and still have appetite for more, he can turn his attentions to the map editor. This tool can be used to create randomised maps, which the player/designer can then refine to his own liking. If this is too simple, the map designer is free to do everything himself, using the welter of “paintbrushes” that symbolise all the possible types of terrain. The placeable units are allocated according to a clever point-based system devised to simplify the task of generating balanced forces.

Spoilt for Choice

Another plus point contributing to an enhancement in the depth of play is the vast number of unit and vehicle types. The Allied and Axis powers taken together offer a selection of approximately 260 infantry and vehicle units. All units possess their own personality and weak points. The personality factor prevents the troops from executing suicidal actions even when commanded to do so, but also means that, in contrast, a soldier under fire might decide to hit the dirt or panic. A good support for the soldiers’ moral is an officer within visual range (Note: an HQ does not need to be in visual range to be in C&C.). Favoured weak points are tank drivers that can be taken out if they fail to close their hatch in time. In this way a tank can be then crewed and used for the player’s own purposes (Note: if a tank commander is killed, the remaining crew will continue to function, albeit at a disadvantage, after recovering from the shock. Also, if a vehicle is destroyed or abandoned, it cannot be used by either side.) . Each of the units carries a combination of weapons that even use various types of munitions (Note: this is true for most of the units, not all of them.).

So-so Graphics

The graphics in Combat Mission have unfortunately a somewhat “antiquated“ feel about them. You won’t be seeing dramatic and screen-filling explosions. The game is too utilitarian for this (Note: there are numerous third party mods available for free download that will greatly enhance the graphical presentation. Yes, there are even a few mods that replace the original explosion graphics.). You can assess the tactical value of the terrain elements immediately. There are about 20 different terrain types such as fields, bushes, and roads. These are supplemented by several types of houses, churches, bridges, and elevations of up to fifty metres (Note: each map can include up to 100 metres of elevation change.). The battlefield is depicted in 3D and the player can view it via an ostensibly free roving camera that can really get into almost every nook and cranny. In order to be able to quickly check what a unit can see there is the "Line of Sight" tool. This draws a red line from the selected unit to the mouse cursor. If the line of sight is blocked, the line appears in black from the point of blockage. If this tool is used to target an enemy unit, it will give the player additional information on the possible percentage chances of hitting the target (Note: this is true for targeting vehicles only. When targeting “soft” targets, a target cover percentage is displayed.).

E-gaming

A network mode, in which all the operations and missions are available, allows the player to while away his free time with friends. Because the player might well like to go online, but be turned off by the telephone costs involved in a long turn-based strategy game, the developers have come up with the excellent idea of enabling a game to be played via email.

Beauty Is Not Skin-Deep

When I first started up the game the notion of medieval graphics came immediately to mind. But I soon noticed that what the graphics lacked was made up for by the AI. The computer plans its actions with almost exemplary precision and this is true for the player-generated maps too. Should you be a “graphics fan,” occasional strategist, or prefer something “light-weight“ then give this game a wide berth. You would soon lose patience and discard it.

"...they could have had Berlin much earlier than they did, was after the initial breakthroughs in our outer defenses. There was a period of time where our defenses looked like a dumbbell. One end was circling the [Adolf Hitler's] bunker and one end was circling the Olympic Stadium, which included the Pichelsdorf Bridge, where we were going to break out from, with a very long, narrow strip between the two on either side of Heerstrasse. They could have very easily attacked the bunker area by driving east, straight down Heerstrasse. In fact, they had individual tanks crossing Heerstrasse all the time. We were able to keep in contact with the units around the Olympic Stadium by the subway tunnel that ran under Heerstrasse. Every time I updated the situation map I always wondered why they didn't realize what they could do. We just didn't have enough troops to defend everywhere. The Russians just kept attacking where we were the strongest. They kept trying to get to the center of the city by the shortest way when the longer way would have been a lot easier..."

We are about 95% done with game feature implementations, which includes the optional Rarity system, Vehicle Morale, to revamp of movement orders/behaviors, implementation of Covered Arcs (fire lanes), significant changes to artillery modeling, improved PBEM features (such as a display of options chosen), new terrain types, new weather conditions, trenches and other new fortifications, new squad AT behavior, the ability to "Randomize" practically all Quick Battle settings, optional pre-game force reduction levels (to simulate depleted units prior to battle), optional ammo reduction levels, new interface, separation of the theater into "Regions" (so you don't have Italians fighting in Finish terrain, etc), and probably a couple dozen things I can't think of off the top of my head Some tweaking still needed here and there, but basically things are done and have been hammered by testers quite a bit.

Historical data is also coming along really well. All the German, Soviet, and Romanian TO&E is in the game. Boy, what a headache that was Italian TO&E is about 50% in, Finnish is done on paper but not in yet. We are still assembling materials to construct the full Hungarian TO&E. Should get a pile of books in the next week or two to help the latter.

Almost all technical data for vehicles, guns, small arms, etc. have been coded up.

All of the 3D vehicle models have been created, but few are in the game yet. Let me tell you, that is going to be a fun month of my time

Artwork is also coming along VERY well. Almost totally done with completely new terrain textures for the various different types of weather conditions. Vehicle and uniform artwork has only been scratched, but we have all the materials necessary to make the textures.

Er... uhm... and lots of other stuff. Not trying to tell you EVERYTHING about where we are at, just enough so you can get a sense of how far we have come.

Now, for the obvious question...

WHEN WILL THE GAME BE RELEASE?!?!?

We are currently projecting end of 1st Quarter 2002. This is later than we had expected, but the extended support of Combat Mission - Beyond Overlord greatly delayed the start of CMBB. We do not regret the time spent making CMBO that much better, but it did not come without a consequences.

As with CMBO, we will not release CMBB until it is ready, which is why we do not have a firm ship date. This can be frustrating for some, but if every software developer behaved this way there would be a LOT more great games to choose from out there. Software development, especially game development, is an art and not a science.

As for the demo... we are not planning on releasing a demo until we are VERY near to release. We lost almost 1.5 months of CMBO development time when we released the Beta Demo because of all the support which was necessary for the obviously not finished game. This means that if we release the demo sooner the final product will definitely be delayed. On the whole, this is not desirable for anybody.

What comes next? Well, we are going to release a batch of screenshots showing off the new terrain graphics sometime this month. We are sure you will be impressed

Well, that is about all for now! Please understand that you guys are just going to have to take this information "as is". The number of questions you guys could come up with based on this one post could keep one of us posting answers for the next two weeks All good things will be known in time, all good things will come to those who wait We'll post details on some of the new features in the weeks and months to come, but for now we need to get our noses back to the grindstone!

Thanks for all your support now and in the future,

Comrades Deputies!

Five months have elapsed since the last session of the Supreme Soviet. During this short period of time, events of paramount importance in the development of international relations have occurred. This makes it necessary at the present session of the Supreme Soviet to look at the issues relevant to our foreign policy.

The recent events in international life must, first of all, be scrutinized in the light of the war which began last autumn in Central Europe. In the war between the Anglo-French bloc and Germany there have been no major battles yet, they are limited to separate confrontations, chiefly at sea but also in the air. It is generally known, however, that the British and French governments turned down German peace efforts, made public by her already at the end of last year, which for its part, owed to preparations to escalate the war.

Germany, which has lately united 80 million Germans, has submitted certain neighboring countries to her supremacy and gained military strength in many aspects, and thus has become, as clearly can be seen, a dangerous rival to principal imperialistic powers in Europe - England and France. That is why they declared war on Germany on a pretext of fulfilling the obligations given to Poland. It is now clearer than ever, how remote the real aims of the cabinets in these countries were from the interests of defending the now disintegrated Poland or Czechoslovakia. This is shown if only by the fact, that the British and French governments declared that their aim in this war is to smash and dismember Germany, although this target is concealed from the masses of the people under the cover of slogans of defending the "democratic" countries and the "rights" of small nations.

When the Soviet Union did not want to be an accomplice with England and France in carrying out this imperialistic policy against Germany, the hostility in their attitudes regarding the Soviet Union became still more pronounced, giving a vivid evidence, how profound the class roots of the imperialists' hostile politics against the socialist state are. The Anglo-French imperialists were ready to escalate the war started in Finland to a war against the USSR and not only utilizing Finland to this purpose - but also Scandinavian countries, Sweden and Norway.

The Soviet attitude to the war, which has spread out in Europe, is well known. Here too, the foreign policy of the Soviet Union, which is penetrated by love for peace, has been quite definitively displayed. The Soviet Union made it immediately known that it stays neutral, and we have unswervingly adhered to this policy over the past period of time.

A sudden improvement in Soviet-German relations found its expression in the form of the non-aggression pact signed in August last year. This new good relationship between the Soviet Union and Germany has stood the trial in connection with the events in the former Poland and has thus fairly showed its permanence. With negotiations which began already last autumn, the expected development of economic relations assumed a concrete form in the trade agreement in August (1939) and later in February (1940). The exchange of commodities between Germany and the USSR began to increase on the basis of a mutual economical advantage, and good grounds for its further development exist.

Our relations with England and France have taken a somewhat different course. When the Soviet Union did not want to become an instrument of Anglo-French imperialists in their campaign for world hegemony, we have encountered at every step deep hostility of their policy towards our country. The very extreme they got involved in the Finnish issue, of which I shall discuss later. But during the past few months also other facts emerged which showed that the hostility of the policy of France and England towards the USSR was not small.

It should be sufficient if I point out that the French authorities did not devise anything better than to arrange two months ago a police raid on our Trade Delegation in Paris. The police investigation of the Trade Delegation, despite all quibbling, resulted in nothing. It only brought disgrace on the initiators of this outrageous incident and showed that there were no real grounds for this hostile action toward our country. As we see from the circumstances connected with the recall of our plenipotentiary representative comrade Surits, the French government seeks trumped up grounds to emphasize its unfriendly attitude toward the Soviet Union. To make it clear that mutual relations do not interest the Soviet Union more than France, we summoned comrade Surits home from the post of the plenipotentiary representative in France.

Or take similar examples of animosity in actions against the Soviet Union, such as the seizure by British warships in the Far East of two of our ships heading for Vladivostok with cargo bought by us in America and China. If to this we add such facts as refusal to fulfil old orders for industrial machinery placed by us in England, sequestering of funds of our trade representation in France and many others, the hostile nature of measures against the Soviet Union by the British and French authorities will be more manifest.

There have been attempts to justify these hostile acts against our foreign trade by arguing that through our trade with Germany we assist her in the war against England and France. It does not take much to convince oneself that these arguments are not worth a penny. You just have to compare the Soviet Union, say, with Rumania. It is well known that half of the whole foreign trade of Rumania consists of trade with Germany, and the share of Rumanian domestic product in her export to Germany, for instance, of some basic commodities like crude oil products and grain, far exceeds the share of our own domestic product in exports to Germany. Nevertheless, the British and French governments have not resorted to hostile acts toward Rumania and does not consider it possible to demand an end to the Rumanian trade with Germany. A strikingly different attitude prevails against the Soviet Union. Consequently, the hostile acts of Britain and France against the Soviet Union cannot be explained by the USSR trade with Germany, but by the futile expectations of the ruling circles in England and France, to use our country in the war against Germany and they, because of this, are conducting a policy of revenge towards the Soviet Union.

It should be added that all these hostile actions of Britain and France were carried out even though the Soviet Union up till now has not taken any unfriendly actions in regard to these countries. Fantasy-loaded plans attributed to the Soviet Union about some Red Army march "to India", "to the Orient" etc. are such obvious absurdities that only such people, who completely have lost their senses, can believe in this ridiculous nonsense. (Laughter). This is not the point, of course. The reason comes obviously from the fact that the neutrality policy pursued by the Soviet Union is not for the taste of the Anglo-French ruling class. Furthermore, it seems that their nerves are not quite all right. (Laughter). They want to impose on us a different policy, a policy of enmity and war against Germany, a policy which could allow them to use the USSR for imperialistic purposes. It is time for these gentlemen to understand that the Soviet Union is not and never will be a tool of an alien policy, and that the Soviet Union has always conducted and will always pursue her own policy irrespective of whether it pleases the ruling gentlemen in other countries or not. (Tumultuous, prolonged applause).

I will now go over to the Finnish issue.

What was the point of the war waged over the last three-odd months in Finland? You know that the point of these events was to safeguard the security of the northwestern borders of the Soviet Union and, above all, in safeguarding the security of Leningrad.

All through October and November last year the Soviet government negotiated with the Finnish government about proposals, which we considered absolutely essential and urgent to achieve in securing the safety of the country, and especially the safety of Leningrad, as the international situation became more and more tension loaded. These negotiations ended in failure because of the hostile attitude of the Finnish representatives. Thus the solution of the issue was moved to the battlefield. You can be fully assured that if there had been no outside interference in Finland, if there had been fewer background operators of certain third-party countries to incite hostile policy against the Soviet Union, the Soviet Union and Finland had already at the beginning of last autumn reached an understanding and the matter would have been settled without war. But in spite of the fact that the Soviet government reduced its requests to a minimum, diplomatic means were not successful enough to reach a settlement.

Now that hostilities in Finland have ceased and a Peace Treaty between the USSR and the Republic of Finland has been signed, the significance of the war waged in Finland can and must be judged according to indisputable facts. These facts speak for themselves. These facts show that near Leningrad, all over the Karelian Isthmus to a depth of 50-60 kilometers, the Finnish authorities had erected numerous strong reinforced concrete and granite-ground fortifications armed with artillery and machine guns. The number of these fortifications ran into many hundreds. These military fortifications, particularly, reinforced concrete structures of high military strength, with their underground thoroughfares, surrounded by special anti-tank trenches and granite pillars, supported by a set-up of countless mine fields, constituted what was known as the"Mannerheim Line" which was constructed under the supervision of appropriate foreign experts to bear a likeness to the "Maginot Line" and "Siegfried Line". It should be mentioned that these fortifications were up till now considered as impregnable i.e. as fortifications never broken through by any army. It should also be mentioned that Finnish military authorities had tried in advance to convert every village in this area into a fortress furnished with arms, radio antennas and fuel stations. In many parts of southern and eastern Finland strategic railroads and highways, without any economic significance, were built right up to our borders.

In short, the military preparations in Finland have shown that Finland and particularly the Karelian Isthmus was already before 1939 set up as a ready-made military bridge-head for third-party countries' attack on the Soviet Union, on Leningrad.

Undeniable facts have shown that the hostility of the Finnish policy encountered by us last autumn was not accidental. Anti-Soviet forces prepared in Finland against our country and particularly Leningrad a military bridge-head, which under certain foreign policy circumstances, unfavorable to the Soviet Union, could have played its role in the plans of the anti-Soviet imperialists and their allies in Finland.

Not only has the Red Army smashed the "Mannerheim Line" and thus earned the glory to be the first army which under most difficult conditions cut its way through an extensive and strong zone of perfectly modern military fortifications - the Red Army acting together with the Red Navy not only smashed the military base prepared for attacking Leningrad and, but they eliminated some anti-Soviet plans fostered during the past few years by certain third-party countries. (Prolonged applause).

How far had gone the enmity of the Finnish ruling and military circles toward our country, in the preparation of a military bridge-head against the USSR, becomes also evident by many facts of exceptional barbarism and atrocities perpetrated by the White Finns on wounded and captured Red Army soldiers. Thus, when, in a certain area north of Lake Ladoga, the Finns besieged our hospital shelter with 120 severely wounded people there, the White Finns destroyed them all to a man. Some were burned, others were found with crushed skulls, while the rest had been stabbed or shot. Despite the deadly wounds, a considerable number of those killed here or elsewhere had signs of gunshot wounds on their heads or had been finished off with rifle butts and a part of those had been killed by firearms had knife stabs in their faces. Some of the corpses found had their heads severed, the heads were not found. And regarding nurses captured by White Finns, they were submitted to particular disgrace and unbelievable bestiality. In some cases the bodies of those killed were set, with their feet uppermost, against tree trunks. All this barbarism and numerous bestialities resulted from the policy of the Finnish White Guardists when they have tried to fan hatred against our country among their people.

This is how the Finnish defenders of "the Western civilization" really look like.

It is not hard to see that the war in Finland was not only a confrontation with the Finnish military forces. No, the matter here was more complicated. The showdown here was not only between our troops and the Finnish troops, it was between the united imperialistic forces of a number of countries including Britain, France and others who aided the Finnish bourgeoisie with all kinds of weaponry, particularly with artillery and airplanes and with their men disguised as "volunteers", with their gold and every kind of supplies, and furthermore, with their frenzied agitation all over the world instigating, with all sorts of means, a war against the Soviet Union. And you have to add, that in this rage howling you all the time could discern the squeaky voices of miscellaneous prostituted "socialists" of the 2nd International (hilarious excitement at the hall), such as Attlee and Blum, Citrine and Jouhaux, Tranmael and Höglund - all those lackeys of capital who have sold themselves body and soul to the warmongers.

The Prime Minister of England, Chamberlain, appearing on March 19 in the House of Commons, not only expressed his malicious regrets at having failed to prevent the war in Finland from ending and thus turning his "peace loving" imperialistic soul inside out for all the world to see (laughter), but he also made some sort of a account how and in what way the British imperialists actually tried to aid warmongering in Finland against the Soviet Union. Chamberlain read out a list of war materials which was promised and dispatched to Finland: airplanes promised 152, sent 101; cannons promised 223, sent 114; shells promised 297 thousand, sent 185 thousand; Vickers cannons promised 100, sent 100; aircraft bombs promised 20,700, sent 15,700; antitank mines promised 20,000, sent 10,000 etc. Without a least embarrassment Chamberlain stated that "preparations for an expedition were being carried on with all rapidity and at the beginning of March an expeditionary force of 100,000 men was ready to leave, two month before the date Mannerheim had set for their arrival. This was not necessarily the last force."

This is how a "peace loving" British imperialist looks in deeds, on his own admission.

As far as France is concerned, according to newspaper accounts, 179 airplanes, 472 cannons, 795,000 shells, 5,100 machine guns, 200,000 hand grenades etc. were sent from there to Finland. On the 11th of March, Daladier, then the Prime Minister of France declared in the Chamber of Deputies, that "France has taken the lead of the countries that agreed to deliver war material for Finland, and France has, especially, at Helsinki's request just sent to Finland ultramodern bomber airplanes". Daladier declared that "from the 26th of February an expeditionary French military corps has been equipped and ready to leave". A considerable amount of vessels have been ready to sail from two main ports at the Channel and on the Atlantic coast. Daladier also stated that the allies "will come to assist Finland with all the promised forces".

These anti-Soviet statements by Daladier speak for themselves. However, there is no need to stop at these hostile statements because, you see, they do not completely possess a sober train of thoughts. (Hilarious excitement at the hall).

Sweden's participation in the Finnish war deserves another comment. According to reports circulated in all the Swedish newspapers Sweden made a "certain amount of airplanes, forming approximately a fifth part of all the Swedish military air force at that time" available to Finland in the war against the Soviet Union. According to a statement of the Swedish War Minister the Finns received from Sweden 84,000 rifles, 575 machine guns, over 300 cannons, 300 thousand grenades, 50 million bullets. This material was, according to the minister's statement, all the very newest models.

Even Italy did not lag behind when adding fuel to the war in Finland. For instance, she sent to Finland 50 military airplanes.

Finland got military assistance even from the United States, from a devoted "peace lover". (Open laughter).

The total number of all sorts of weapons sent from other countries to Finland just during the war reached, according to incomplete information: airplanes at least 350, cannons about 1,500, over 6,000 machine guns, up to 100 thousand rifles, 650,000 handgrenades, 2,500,000 shells, 160,000,000 cartridges and much more.

There is no need to quote other facts which confirm that the confrontation which took place in Finland was not only between us and the Finnish troops but it was a showdown with the combined imperialistic forces of a number of most imperialistic anti-Soviet countries. When the Red Army and the Red Navy crushed these combined enemy forces they added a new glorious page in their history and demonstrated that the source of bravery, devotion and heroism among our people is inexhaustible. (Tumultuous applause).

The war in Finland took a big toll both on us and the Finns. According to estimates of our General Staff, the number of those fallen and fatally wounded is on our side 48,745, thus somewhat less than 49,000 persons and the number of the wounded is 158,863 persons. On the Finnish side efforts are made to diminish the number of their victims, but their casualties are far bigger than ours. According to the most cautious calculations by our General Staff the number of those fallen is at least 60 thousand, not counting the fatally wounded, and the number of the wounded is at least 250,000. When you start from the fact that the number of the Finnish army has been at least 600 thousand men, you have to draw a conclusion that the Finnish army lost half its ranks as killed or wounded.

Such are the facts.

The question remains, why did the ruling circles of England and France and even of several other countries to take such an active part on the Finnish side against the Soviet Union. It is well known that the British and French governments undertook desperate efforts to prevent the war from ending and the restoration of peace in Finland, although they are not bound by any obligation towards Finland. It is also known that France, even though it had a mutual assistance pact with Czechoslovakia, did not come to the aid of Czechoslovakia. Yet both France and England actually insisted on giving military assistance to Finland just to prevent the war come to an end and peace to be restored between Finland and the Soviet Union. Hired pen bandits - all kinds of writers specialized in newspaper swindling and hoaxes - try to explain this sort of behavior of the British and French circles as particular solicitude for "small countries". But explaining the British and French policies by telling that they especially care for the interests of a small country is simply absurd. And explanations that this derives from their commitments to the League of Nations, which require, some argue, defending of its members, are not either particularly witty.

Yes, less than a year has elapsed since Italy usurped and destroyed independent Albania, a member of the League of Nations. And what happened? Did England and France stand up for Albania, did they raise their voice, however feeble, against the violent Italian usurpation of Albania, paying no attention to its population of over one million, and ignoring the fact that Albania was a member of the League of Nations? No, neither the British nor the French governments, nor yet the United States of America, nor the League of Nations having already lost all its prestige because it is dominated by the same British and French imperialists, lifted a finger because of this incident. These "protectors" of small nations, these "champions" of the rights of members of the League of Nations have during a whole of 12 months never decided to put forward for discussion the issue of Italian capture of Albania, which already took place last April. Even more, they virtually have sanctioned this seizure. Consequently, protection of small nations or the rights of members of the League of Nation cannot be accounted for the support of Finland by the ruling circles in England and France against the Soviet Union. This assistance can be explained by the fact that in Finland the ruling circles of England and France had a ready-made military base to launch an assault against the USSR, whereas Albania did not occupy a similar position in their plans. In fact, rights and interests of small nations are just so much small change in the hands of imperialists.

The leading newspaper of the British imperialists "Times", like the leading newspaper of the French imperialists "Temps", not to speak about other British or French bourgeois newspapers, have during these past months openly incited an intervention against the Soviet Union without lending an ear to the fact that between both England and France and the Soviet Union, on the other side, the so-called normal diplomatic relations are maintained. The same tune as these leading bourgeois newspapers, or even running ahead of them, is played by the folk in the lackey chamber, now built in every "decent" bourgeois state, in England by Attlee-like "socialists" and in France those like Blum, expressing such a hot enthusiasm for inciting and escalating the war. In the statements of British and French imperialistic press and their "socialist" yes-men, the same voice of ferocious imperialism, filled with hate against the socialist state, is heard, that we knew from the first days of the existence of the Soviet Union. As far back as April 17, 1919 the London "Times" wrote:

"If we look at a map, we shall find that the best approach to Petrograd is from the Baltic and that the shortest and easiest route is through Finland, whose frontiers are only about thirty miles distant from the Russian capital. Finland is the key to Petrograd, and Petrograd is the key to Moscow".

If it previously was necessary to find some kind of evidence about these kinds of madcap plans, not up to the present given up by British and French imperialists, then now, after the recent events in Finland, all ambiguities about this have disappeared. These plans have once again failed, not because of lack of zeal on the part of anti-Soviet forces in Britain and France, or because of the leading circles of Finland, or those of Sweden and Norway, coming to their senses at the last minute. These plans failed due to brilliant victories won by the Red Army, especially on the Karelian Isthmus. (Applause). But we do not forget, that recent events remind all of us again that it is necessary continuously strengthen the power of the Red Army and of all defenses of our country. (Uproarious and prolonged applause).

In the beginning of February the Finns delivered a inquiry about ending the war. We learned through the Swedish government that the Finnish government desired to ascertain our terms upon which the war could be brought to an end. Before deciding this question, we consulted the People's Democratic Government of Finland* for their opinion about this question. The People's Government, in order to put an end to bloodshed and to alleviate the burdens of the Finnish people, agreed that every effort should be made to bring the war to an end. We then put forward the conditions which were soon after accepted by the Finnish government. I must add, that the week after the negotiations with the Finns were opened, the British government also expressed the desire to act as a mediator in the negotiations ostensibly for the purpose of ending the war (laughter), but when our plenipotentiary representative in England comrade Maisky informed London of our proposals, which were subsequently adopted in their entirety by Finland, the British government did not wish to cooperate in ending the war and restoring peace between the Soviet Union and Finland. This did not prevent an agreement from being soon concluded between the Soviet Union and Finland. The outcome of this agreement and ceasing of hostilities and restoring peace are contained in the Peace Treaty, signed on the 12th of March. In connection with this the People's Democratic Government* took up the issue of its dissolution, which it carried out of its own volition.

You are familiar with the provisions stipulated in the Peace Treaty. In accordance with the Treaty southern and part of the eastern borders of Finland have been altered. The whole Karelian Isthmus, both Vyborg and Vyborg Bay, the eastern and northern coast of Lake Ladoga, Kexholm (Finn. Käkisalmi, now Priozersk - the names in parenthesis added by the translator!) and Sortavala have been transferred to the Soviet Union. On a region bordering Kandalaksha where the Finnish border went especially close to the Murmansk railway, the border has been pushed farther off. In the north, small parts of Sredniy (Finn. Keskisaarento) and Rybatsiy (Finn. Kalastajasaarento) peninsulas, formerly belonging to Finland, and in the Gulf of Finland a well-known group of islands, Hogland (Finn. Suursaari) included, were moved to the Soviet Union. In addition to that, Hanko Peninsula with adjacent islands was transferred to the Soviet Union in a form of a rental agreement for 30 years, with an annual payment of 9 million Finnish marks, and there our naval base will be built as protection against aggression at the entrance to the Gulf of Finland. This agreement also facilitates the transit of goods for Sweden, Norway and the Soviet Union. Together with this, the Peace Treaty stipulates a mutual abstention from all kinds of aggression against the other party and a prohibition to join any hostile coalitions.

There have been attempts in the Anglo-French press to depict the Soviet-Finnish treaty and, especially the transfer of the Karelian Isthmus to the Soviet Union, as an "annihilation" of Finland's independence. This is, of course, absurdity and pure nagging. Finland still comprises a territory which is four times larger than Hungary and eight times or more larger than Switzerland. If nobody has any doubts that Hungary and Switzerland are independent countries, then how could anyone doubt the independence and sovereignty of Finland?

The same Anglo-French press wrote that the Soviet Union wants to change Finland into a mere Baltic Sea country. This is also, of course, stupidity. It should be sufficient to show that when USSR, during the war, occupied the Petsamo (now Pechenga) area adjoining to the Arctic Ocean, she voluntarily returned this area to Finland, because she considered it essential to let Finland have an ice-free ocean port. Consequently we consider Finland to be not only a Baltic Sea country but also a northern one.

There is no truth in these fabrications of Anglo-French newspapers which are old hands in the art of falsified anti-Soviet propaganda. The truth lies elsewhere, namely in the fact that the Soviet Union, after crushing the Finnish army and with a full capacity to occupy the whole of Finland did not do that and did not demand any indemnities to compensate her war expenses, that would have been done by any other power, and limited her wishes to the minimum thus displaying magnanimity toward Finland.

What is the basic logic behind the Peace Treaty? It is that it duly guarantees the security of Leningrad, Murmansk and the Murmansk railway. This time we could not confine ourselves merely to those desires we brought up last autumn, acceptance of which by Finland would have averted war. After our soldiers' blood was shed - we are not to blame for this - and when we became convinced how far the hostile policy of the Finnish government towards the Soviet Union has gone, the issue on Leningrad's security should be placed on a firmer basis, and furthermore an issue of the security of Murmansk railway and Murmansk must be arranged, because Murmansk is our only ice-free ocean port in the West and therefore exceptionally important to our foreign trade and, in general, to the Soviet Union's connections with other countries. No other objects than that of safeguarding the security of Leningrad, Murmansk and the Murmansk railroad were pursued by us in the Peace Treaty. But we considered it essential to settle this problem effectively and in a durable way. The starting point of the Peace Treaty is the recognition of the principle of the sovereignty of Finland, the recognition of the independence of her domestic and foreign policy and, simultaneously, the necessity to secure the safety of Leningrad and the northwest boundaries of the Soviet Union.

Now the objects set by us have been achieved and we may express our full satisfaction with the Treaty made with Finland. (Applause).

From now on political and economical relations with Finland will be fully restored. The government expresses its confidence that normal and good neighborly relations will develop between the Soviet Union and Finland.

One must, however, give a warning against attempts to violate the Peace Treaty just concluded that are already attempted by some circles in Finland, as well as in Sweden and Norway under the pretext of creating a joint defense alliance between them. In the light of a recent speech by Mr. Hambro, chairman of the Norwegian Storting, in which, referring to historical examples, where he urged Finland to "win back its borders" and proclaimed that this peace, which have been concluded between the Soviet Union and Finland, "cannot last for long" - in the light of this and similar statements, it is not hard to understand that efforts to form a so-called "defensive alliance" of Finland, Sweden and Norway are aimed against the Soviet Union and that these efforts are warmed up by reckless ideology of a military revanche. The formation of a military alliance of this kind, with Finland taking part in it, would be, not only contradictory with the 3rd paragraph of the Peace Treaty which excludes the contracting parties from taking part in any mutually hostile coalitions (alliances), but also in contradiction with the Peace Treaty as a whole which firmly defines the boundary between the Soviet Union and Finland. Finnish participation in any revanchist alliance against the Soviet Union is inconsistent with loyalty to this Treaty. If Sweden and Norway should take part in an alliance like this, it means, that they have given up conducting their neutrality policies and that they have entered into new foreign policy, from which the Soviet Union cannot abstain from drawing appropriate conclusions.

Our government on its part feels that it has no points of dispute with either Sweden or Norway and that Soviet-Swedish and Soviet-Norwegian relations should develop on a basis of friendship. Spreading of rumours for anti-Soviet purposes telling that the Soviet Union is demanding ports on the western coast of Scandinavia, is laying claims on Narvik, etc. are so absurd that they do not even need a denial. The efforts of gentlemen, "socialists" - like Höglund in Sweden and Tranmael in Norway - to ruin the relations between these countries and the Soviet Union can only be branded as an act done by the worst enemies of the working class, by traitors who have betrayed the interests of their own people because of bribes given by foreign capitalists.

The conclusion of the Peace Treaty with Finland accomplishes the task which was set last year to secure the safety of the Soviet Union on the Baltic Sea edge. This Treaty is a necessary complement to the three pacts of mutual cooperation made with Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. A half year's experience since the signing of these cooperation treaties enables us to draw very definite and positive conclusions concerning the treaties made with the Baltic states. It must be admitted that the treaties made by the Soviet Union with Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have contributed to strengthen the international position of both the Soviet Union and of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Despite the intimidations by hostile anti-Soviet imperialistic circles, the national sovereignty and political independence of Estonia, Latvia or Lithuania has not been subject to any sufferings, on the contrary, the economic relations of these countries with the Soviet Union started to expand appreciably. The fulfillment of the treaties with Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, being carried out satisfactorily, creates the prerequisite for further improvements in relations between the Soviet Union and these states.

During recent days an exceptionally large attention has been devoted in the foreign press on the issue of relations between the Soviet Union and her neighbours on the southern borders, especially in Transcaucasia, but also with Rumania. Is there any need to prove that the Soviet government sees no reason to worsen the relations with our neighbours in the south, too. Though just right now in Syria and, in more general, in the Near East there is a big and suspicious fuss going on in the creation of the Anglo-French, mostly colonial armies headed by General Weygand. We must stay alert in regarding attempts to use these colonial and other forces for purposes hostile to the Soviet Union. Any attempts of this kind would evoke countermeasures from our side against aggressors and, moreover, the danger in playing with fire must be most evident to powers hostile to the USSR and to those of our neighbours who are revealed for being tools to this aggressive policy against the USSR (Applause). As far as Turkey and Iran are concerned the relations are defined by the existing non-aggression pacts between us and the unswerving aspiration of the Soviet Union to fulfill what follows from reciprocal obligations. Our relations to Iran on the economical field are regulated by a recently concluded Soviet-Iranian trade agreement.

When I mentioned our southern neighbouring countries, no non-aggression pact with Rumania has been made. This is due to the fact that there exists a non-settled controversial issue, the dilemma of Bessarabia, the seizure of which by Rumania was never recognised by the Soviet Union, but who never put forward settling the problem of Bessarabia's reunification by means of war. Therefore, there is no reason for any kind of worsening in the Soviet-Rumanian relations. Though just right now we had not have a plenipotentiary representative in Rumania for a long time and his duties are taken care by a chargé d'affaires. This is, however, caused by current specific circumstances. If we touch upon this question, we have to remind you about the unseemly role of Rumanian authorities in 1938 towards Butenko, who that time acted as the Soviet representative in Rumania. It is well known that Butenko mysteriously disappeared not only from the legation but also from Rumania, and the Soviet government has not succeeded in establishing anything reliable about this disappearance, and what is more we are expected to believe, that no Rumanian authority was involved in this scandalous criminal act. Needless to say, things like this should not happen in a civilized country and, nor in any at least somewhat well-ordered country, for that matter. After this, the reason for delay in appointing a Soviet representative to Rumania is understandable. It is to be assumed, however, that Rumania will comprehend that similar incidents are intolerable.

In our relations to Japan some issues have been solved although not without certain difficulties. This is confirmed by the Soviet-Japanese fisheries agreement for the current year concluded on 31st of December last year, and by Japan's consent to pay the last, long overdue installment for the East-China railway. In addition to that, no greater satisfaction can be expressed concerning our relations to Japan. To this day for example, despite the prolonged negotiations between the delegates of the Soviet Union and Mongolia on the one side and Japan and Manchuria on the other side, the important problem concerning fixing of the boundary on a part of a territory, in the region where there was a military incident, remains unsettled. Japanese authorities continue to raise obstacles to normal use of the last installment made by them for the East-China railway. In many cases the attitudes of Japanese authorities to the employees of Soviet agencies have been completely abnormal. It should be finally understood in Japan that the Soviet Union tolerates in no case violations to her interests. (Prolonged applause.) Only if Soviet-Japanese relations are understood in this way they can develop satisfactorily.

In connection with Japan I would like to say a couple of words about one, so to speak, non-business matter. (Hilarious movement at the hall). Recently a member of the Japanese parliament submitted this inquiry to his cabinet: "Could it be considered, to end completely conflicts between the USSR and Japan, for instance, by means of buying off the Pacific coast and other territories." (Bursts of laughter). The Japanese parliamentarian, who presented this question and who is interested in buying Soviet territories, which are not for sale (laughter), is at least an amusing man. (Laughter, applause). But with his silly inquiries he, I presume, does not increase the prestige of his parliament. (Laughter). But if there is, in the Japanese parliament, this kind of strong enthusiasm in bargaining, could the deputies of this parliament be concerned in putting South Sakhalin for sale. (Laughter, prolonged applause). I have no doubts that buyers would be found in the USSR. (Laughter, applause).

Regarding our relations with the United States of America they have not improved lately or, very likely, neither worsened if you do not count the so-called "moral embargo" against the USSR, deprived of any sense, especially after when peace was made between the USSR and Finland. Our imports from the United States have increased as compared with the last year. They might increase still more if American authorities did not put obstacles in the way.

Such on the whole is the international situation as a consequence of the events of the past five months.

From what was stated above the main goals of our foreign policy, as we see them, in the present international situation can be found.

In short, the task of our foreign policy is to ensure peace between nations and guaranteeing the safety of our country. What follows up from this - keeping to neutrality and refraining from taking part in the war between the major powers of Europe. This attitude is based on the treaties we have concluded and it fully complies with the interests of the Soviet Union. This attitude also exercises a curbing effect on escalating and inflaming of war in Europe, and is therefore in the interests of all nations that are striving for peace and are wailing under the enormous new sufferings caused by the war.

When we make a summary of the past period of time we see that in safeguarding our country's security considerable successes have been attained by us. This is just what makes our enemies infuriated. We, however, confident in our cause and in our strength, will consistently and unswervingly carry on our foreign policy.

(Tumultuous prolonged applause all around the session hall. Deputies stand in ovation)."

A Fond Farewell News by SuperTed @ 20:44

Manx makes his final report:

"One last final update from me -- My orders have come through -- today it has been announced on the CM Forum that i am to be posted to CMHQ with immediate effect and that i am to report for active duty to work alongside Madmatt and SuperTed. We are to begin transferring all the files on COMBAT MISSIONS that are not duplicated, and port them over to CMHQ asap. This will probably take us a week or two to fully complete. Once this is done, CM's will cease to operate.

I would like to thank all those (far too many to mention) who have taken the time to contribute to this site over the past one and a half years that it has been in existence -- without the high standard of work submitted by you, this site would never have become as popular as it did.

No one likes to see a site close down, but i'm really looking forward to be involved with the great things planned for CMHQ. I fully intend to throw my own ideas and ways of working into the mix at CMHQ, and so the true spirit of mod-sluttyness will no doubt continue over there -- Only this time -- MUCH, MUCH WORSE! :-)"

A Little Story News by SuperTed @ 23:18

Once upon a time…

It seems such a long time ago now, but it has been less than three years. In that time, so much has happened that it is hard to remember it all. One story, however, really stands out from the others. It is a story of perseverance, hard work, and a common goal. This story has two beginnings, one middle, and the ending has yet to be written.

Let's start with the first beginning. We find ourselves in Ohio about three years ago watching a figure perched over his computer keyboard typing feverishly and laughing maniacally at what he types for others to read. This four-hour ritual is performed almost every night for many months and changes the mad typist in horrifying ways. Once a "normal," hard-working, productive member of society, he has slowly spiraled down into the depths of madness. On his way, he has caught the attention of the wardens of a facility that "helps" others of his kind. These wardens decide that, in the interest of protecting the general populace, it would be best to "invite" this madman to join them.

Without hesitation, he accepts the offer from these friendly strangers. He looks forward to meeting others like him and sharing stories of life on "the outside." The mad typist takes little time adjusting to his new surroundings and decides he would like to stay as long as he can. There is talk of a twelve-year plan for him and he agrees (after the initial shock wears off) that it would be best for all if he was in a safe place.

As the months pass, the madman slowly forgets how much his nightly typing ritual meant to him. Occasionally he is granted permission to do limited typing, but these sessions become fewer and fewer.

Meanwhile, the other beginning to the story is unfolding on a small island halfway around the world from the madman. There is another man who spends time typing on his keyboard and enjoys sharing his work with others. Unfortunately for this island man, he does not have as much time as he would like to spend doing what gives him so much pleasure. Further, it seems the madman is getting all the attention of the adoring public. So, the island man decides to bide his time and wait for an opportunity to present itself.

Well, that opportunity came shortly after the madman entered Big Top Sanitarium. Gradually, the island man received more and more material that he could use. This, combined with the extra time he was able to spend typing, garners him more of the attention that was once reserved only for the madman. As things continued to get better and better for the island man, there were a few bumps along the way. These never amounted to much more than a nuisance and he was able to carry on as usual.

Unfortunately for the island man, just as things were looking as good as could be, a disaster befell him and he was forced to weigh his options and make a very difficult decision. As painful as it was, the island man decided that he was no longer able to continue his typing and resigned himself to a fate of aimless wandering.

Well, about the time the madman entered the sanitarium (which was about the time the island man was becoming busier) a third character entered the picture. A man from the Land of Cheese, seeing a need in the community, decided to set up a service that would help unite typists of all lands. Both the madman and the island man (along with many others) happily joined this new club. Things went so smoothly that the madman asked the cheese man to join forces with him. This partnership allowed the madman's work to receive some attention, albeit a far cry from what it once received.

This arrangement worked well for all three characters. The madman busied himself chasing butterflies on the grounds of Big Top Sanitarium, the island man kept typing away, and the cheese man was reaching a larger audience. This was the time that the disaster struck for the island man. Reacting swiftly (and visiting the madman at the sanitarium, despite risk of great bodily harm), the cheese man devised a plan that would put everything right again.

After many discussions and much begging and pleading, the madman finally agreed to hear the cheese man's idea. Through the drug-induced haze, the madman saw the beauty of the plan. It could...no, it WOULD work! Now, the only thing left to do was convince the island man of the merits of the plan. This was much easier to do than expected and it was settled. All three men agreed on what needed to be done:

Manx is taking over as Director of Content (a.k.a. Mod Bitch) at CMHQ, effective immediately! Also, new stuff on CMHQ should be appearing within a week.

And they all lived happily ever after???

Continuation of the War in the East News by SuperTed @ 20:05

Some light reading:

"The Fuehrer and Supreme Commander Fuehrer Headquarters of the Armed Forces July 19, 1941

13 copies

Directive No. 33

"Continuation of the War in the East"

1. The second series of battles in the East has ended, along the whole front, with the breach of the Stalin Line and the deep thrust of the panzer forces. In the area of Army Group Center, mopping up of the strong enemy forces which still remain between the motorized formations will still require considerable time.

The northern flank of Army Group South is restricted in its freedom of movement and effectiveness by the fortress of Kiev and the Russian 5th Army in its rear.

2. The aim of the next operations must be to prevent any further sizeable enemy forces from withdrawing into the depths of Russia, and to wipe them out.

Plans will be made for this as follows:

(a) South-Eastern Front:

The most important object is, by concentric attacks, to destroy the enemy 12th and 6th Armies while they are still west of the Dnieper. The main Romanian forces will support these operations in the south.

The enemy 5th Army can also be quickly and decisively defeated and annihilated by co-operation between forces on the south flank of Army Group Center and the northern flank of Army Group South.

While infantry divisions of Army Group Center move southward, other forces, chiefly motorized, after carrying out the tasks assigned to them, securing their lines of communication and providing cover in the direction of Moscow, will advance south-eastwards in order to cut off the withdrawal of enemy forces which have crossed to the further bank of the Dnieper, to prevent their withdrawal deeper into Russia, and to destroy them.

(b) Central Part of the Eastern Front:

After the destruction of the many pockets of enemy troops which have been surrounded and the establishment of lines of communication, Army Group Center, while continuing to advance to Moscow with infantry formations, will use these motorized units which are not employed in the rear of the Dnieper line to cut communications between Moscow and Leningrad, and so cover the right flank of the advance on Leningrad by Army Group North.

(c) Northern Part of the Eastern Front:

The advance on Leningrad will be resumed only when 18th Army has made contact with Panzer Group 4 and the extensive flank in the east is adequately protected by 16th Army. At the same time Army Group North must endeavor to prevent Russian forces still in action in Estonia from withdrawing to Leningrad.

Early capture of the Baltic Islands, which might be used as bases by the Soviet Navy, is desirable.

(d) Finnish Front:

It remains the task of the main Finnish forces, reinforced by most of 163rd Division, to attack the enemy opposing them with the main weight of attack east of Lake Ladoga and, later, in conjunction with Army Group North, to destroy them.

The object of the attack under the direction of 36th Corps and the Mountain Corps remains as already directed, except that stronger support from the air cannot be expected for the moment and operations may therefore have to be temporarily delayed.

3. The task of the Luftwaffe is, in particular, as forces become available from the Central front, to support operations on the South eastern front at their most important point by bringing air and anti-aircraft units into action, and, if necessary, by early reinforcement or regrouping.

The attack on Moscow by the bomber forces of 2nd Air Fleet, temporarily reinforced by bomber forces from the West, will be carried out as soon as possible as "reprisal" for Russian attacks on Bucharest and Helsinki.

4. The Navy will continue to ensure the free passage of sea-borne traffic, especially of supplies for the land forces, as far as enemy activity at sea and in the air allows. Further, with the increasing threat to enemy bases, appropriate steps are to be taken to prevent the escape of enemy ships to Swedish ports, where they would be interned.

As naval forces in the Baltic become free, motor torpedo boats and minesweepers -- one flotilla of each to start with -- will be transferred to the Mediterranean.

To support German operations in Finland, which might be hampered by the arrival of enemy reinforcements by sea, a few submarines will be transferred to the Arctic Ocean.

5. All three branches of the Armed Forces in the West and North will bear in mind the possibility of British attacks on the Channel Islands and the Norwegian coast. Plans must be made for the quick transfer of air forces from the West to all parts of Norway.

Signed: Adolf Hitler"

One Tough Tank! News by SuperTed @ 19:54

Yes, you too can own your very own KV-1 in the near future!

"On 18 August 1941, a lone KV-1 (number 864, the commander was Lt.Kolobanov) was dug in and camouflaged near Krasnogvardeysk (Leningrad area). The tank had orders to defend the road from Kinigsep. Four more KVs were ordered to defend two other roads. All the tanks got double ammo loads (2/3 of the rounds were armor piercing). An offensive of the 8th German Panzer Division was expected. Kolobanaov's KV had a great hidden position in the woods on the hill, the crossroad located below and between swamps.

In the next day German motorcycle recon troops, a halftrack, and one light track passed alomg the road. Five minutes later the expected column of 43 tanks appeared and filled the road. The 1st Soviet round flamed the head tank. After two more shots the 2nd tank was flamed too. Then Kolobanov opened fire on the column's tail and flamed the last tank: the Germans were locked. They even couldn't find the Soviet tank and opened area fire. Trying to run, some tanks were immobilized in the swamp. There was chaos on the road. Soviet tankers killed 22 German tanks during 30 minutes.

Then the KV was spotted by the Germans and they opened direct fire. In spite of the impossibility of the German tank guns penetrating the thick KV's armor, ricocheting rounds made terrible working conditions for the Soviet crew. One of German rounds struck the turret ring and the KV was forced to leave its trench and maneuver its hull for aiming.

Then the Soviets noted two German towed guns had appeared at the crossroad. The first shell disabled one gun, but the other gun managed to fire one shot and damaged the KV's periscope. Than that gun was destroyed too.

Their ammo was almost out and Kolobanov got congratulations via the radio and an order to pull back. Already three other KVs were on the way to the battlefield, and they killed 20 more German tanks. There were 42 German tanks and two guns destroyed. Kolobanov's tank received 135 hits, but none penetrated. Kolobanov was awarded the Order of Lenin and Usov (the driver) was awarded the Order of the Red Banner."
