Turn 6

That US platoon on the right flank is starting to give me some cause for concern since it appears to be advancing up the edge of the map using all available cover and making it very hard to spot.  I'd target the right flank 81mm mortar on it but there are no targets at the end of the turn, just the US Star symbol.  E Platoon should complete its move into the woods to the left of the central Flak 88 this turn making me feel a lot more comfortable on that left flank.

Is that a second US platoon coming up my right flank?  Thankfully the first one has not advanced further this turn.  Is the US Commander being careful or does he know there is nobody there?  Continued shelling of the woods by a Sherman.  He must think B Platoon is in there.  Well, it is not, it is in a couple of other patches of woods!  My sharpshooter safely takes up position in the central stone building.  On the left flank I see what looks like mortar units taking up position on the little rise in front of the town and to the left.  Where are his other troops though?  No sign as yet, so I think the US Commander is being ultra cautious in his advance.

Turn 7

Definitely a second US platoon on my right flank.  That gives me cause for real concern as I am not very well protected on that right flank.  I am surprised I cannot see very much activity on my left flank, though I am convinced something is building there with his 2 Shermans and mortar units.  Nothing is moving up the central approaches to the town and the US Commander is keeping several units back with the Shermans on the edge of the map.  He is certainly playing it very cautiously.  Just advance a little into LOS of my Flak 88 please!  I need to know what is happening on my left flank so I'm deploying one squad from E Platoon out a little to see if they can see movement activity on my left flank.

Heavy shelling of empty buildings this turn by the US.  I really do not think he can see any of my units and is just firing blindly to see if he can obtain a reaction.  Excellent, just what I wanted!

Turn 8

Nothing to do this turn except await developments.  I'm getting fidgety!

The first buildings, including the beautiful, ancient church of Riesberg, go down.  Nobody at home!  Ha!  Those American vandals seem intent on just shelling to destruction our centuries of painstaking craftsmanship that went into designing the ancient and beautiful architecture of the town!

Ah ha!  The forward E Platoon squad I deployed on my left flank spots the first US units coming up my left flank just as I expected.  It is exactly what I would have done.  So next turn I will need to move E Platoon into ambush position for them quickly.  On my right flank, I see the US troops are very effectively running between cover during the turns and finishing in cover at the end of the turn so there is no target for us.  Clever!  Looks like he might even be bypassing my 81mm mortar and Flak 88 and going straight for the town.

Turn 9

I am suddenly much more concerned with my right flank now as both US platoons appear to be advancing methodically, but again, leave me no targets for my 81mm mortar at the end of the turn.  I really need to get that 81mm mortar into action quickly though, to check the US advance before it comes too close.  But I do not think it is going to be worth area targeting with the 81mm mortar as I am sure it will be very ineffective and wasteful of precious ammunition.  One more turn of waiting then for this mortar unit.  I have decided to re-deploy E Platoon under cover of the woods to protect the central Flak 88 and to provide good ambush positions.  E Platoon should be able to stop the covertly advancing US forces in their tracks then.

Hey, what has happened?  Why is it so quiet again?  No shelling this turn and no movement from the Shermans.  Has the US Commander sussed what I am trying to do?  I always thought those yanks were such damned noisy b*****ds you could hear them coming for miles!.  I see the first US squads reach the nearest 2-story wooden building on my rear left flank.  I do not think he can possibly know I know he is there, but  I wonder what the US Commander can see of me in the town as yet?  Hopefully nothing.  The right flank seems generally quiet again with no significant advance this turn  Obviously just co-ordinating their positions.  I do spot a US mortar unit and a FO advancing just off centre to the right.

Turn 10

The quietness and the waiting are starting to get to me!  Why don't the US forces attack?  E Platoon should complete its movement into ambush positions this turn, so I'll then be a lot happier on my left flank.  As the central Shermans appear to have taken a break from HE shelling, probably to eat their picnic lunch, I'm going to rotate and target the central Flak 88 round towards the rear corner of the left flank woods preparing for an expected "surprise" US infantry assault from that direction.  Also, I am moving the MG42 HMG alongside the Company Commander to the other side of the stone building so it has LOS to the left rear flank as nothing is coming down the central road into the town.  Since the situation on my right flank has not changed and I have no good targets, I am in two minds as to whether to target and area fire the 81mm mortar there or not.  In the end I decide to keep the right flank 81mm mortar quiet for another turn.  I just hope that is the right decision.

Quiet yet again!  The US Commander obviously must know what I am up to.  The 2-storey wooden building on my rear left flank is filling up nicely with more US troops.  Even if I couldn't see those US squads, I can jolly well hear their sergeants screaming at them to get into position.  A stealthy flanking advance it most certainly is not!  Maybe I'll set my rear right flank Flak 88 to shell the 2-storey wooden building next turn as it is nicely in LOS.  The US right flank troops appear to be moving towards the town away from the corner.  Good, the US Commander must think I have nothing in that right corner.  Keeping quiet really works!

Oh no!  The right flank 81mm mortar disobeys my orders and opens up just 5 seconds before the end of the turn.  What happened?  I did not order it and it is bound to be spotted now.  That's really blown it in the worst possible way!

The 81mm mortar unit about to fire of its own accord in a few seconds on a US infantry unit just before the end of the turn.  Note the lack of distinct targets with all the US Stars around.
