ORDERS
FOR FOURTH MINUTE
Heinrich
is now to target the closest groups of American infantry with high
explosives. If he can keep their heads down even, it will help greatly.
I now need the
firepower that Kraus can provide, despite the risks involved in having
him open fire now. I fear that, even if he does not suffer casualties
from the American infantry’s return fire, he will fixate upon them
and allow the Sherman tanks to blindside him. The Sherman still cannot
see, or be seen by, his gun, and are therefor currently unable to give
direct support to the infantry. If the tanks remain so arranged long
enough for Kraus to fire a handful of shells into the American
infantry, he can cause them a great deal of trouble and avoid being
blindsided by the tanks.
Thieser, on the
right-front, still has seen nothing to his front, and so I direct him
to watch a spot in front of the Americans, and open fire as soon as he
has targets there.
Lamp’s right
and right-front squads are to watch and wait for the newly detected
American infantry to close the range, and then open fire. I do not
expect the Amis to be close enough within the next minute, but there
could be infantry even closer than my men have not yet seen.
Bahr is to hold
his positions a little longer. If there is still nothing developing in
his area when I next contact him with orders, I will begin to pull him
back to town to assist the defense there. I desperately hope that the
Americans are not marshalling forces on the right in the hopes that I
will, indeed, strip the right side to strengthen the center and left.
Intelligence told me to expect a company of infantry with a platoon of
tanks; if that is all the Americans have then their forces on the right
will be considerably weaker than what I have seen on the left. If enemy
units do, indeed, show themselves here after Bahr leaves, it will be up
to Beerbauer’s and Machen’s guns to at least halt them.
ACTION
IN FOURTH MINUTE
Lamp’s
first squad, led by Unteroffizier Ruehe, begins firing at the American
infantry to the town’s front left. He is taken under fire by several
enemy squads, and at least two US tanks are shelling the house he is
in. By the end of the minute his squad is down to half strength, but
his actions have enabled Klappert’s machine gun team to leave the
house unmolested. They are going to set up in the house immediately
behind their starting location and begin firing from there.
Heinrich’s
mortar fires high explosive into the enemy infantry, but I do not know
if there is any result.
The worst news
for this minute concerns Kraus’ gun. He begins lining up on the
infantry squad I chose, but before he can fire he spies an enemy tank.
After an agonizing delay he fires, only to miss. I hope he is able to
correct his aim soon, because I desperately need a break.

“The strength of the enemy assault force is apparent. Kraus has just
fired and missed; the shell is visible just above the label for the
tank he missed.”
Bahr’s men still
report that all is quiet to their front, so I will give them orders to
begin moving back toward town.
