ORDERS
FOR SECOND MINUTE
Klappert asks for
permission to fire at the enemy he can see. After debating, I allow him to
open up, and instruct Heinrich’s mortar to join in. If Klappert is
right, I can direct harassing fire on several units of the enemy. Possibly
the tank that is out there will lock its attention on the mortar or the
machine gun, and won’t see Kraus until it is too late. If return fire on
Klappert is intense, Lt. Lamp’s influence will help get the team moving
out of danger sooner. Lamp would also have to order his Heavy SMG squad to
leave the building, lest it collapse on them. In that event I will have
find a building in the center of town from which they can still fire out
at advancing enemy units.
I order Meister to
set his men up in new positions in the buildings on the town’s
front-right. From there they can hit the road and, along with Thieser, the
area to their front with strong direct fire. Meister himself is to find a
spot in a patch of heavy woods in the center of his units; hopefully he
can effectively command not just his own platoon, but Thieser’s machine
gun as well. Thieser himself is given orders to swing his attention to the
left side of the road, into the apparent path of the American infantry.
Bahr is to hold
tight in his area. I still believe that the Americans will attack in many
places, rather than along a single axis.
I now believe that
the Americans are not going to simply rush down the road in an attempt to
overwhelm my troops with shock effect, so I will dash into a position from
which I can direct Beerbauer’s gun crew.
ACTION
IN SECOND MINUTE
The men on the left
side can see the tank; it is a Sherman of some type. A few seconds after
they arrive at that conclusion, they detect a second tank moving up
alongside. They are not advancing fast enough to be in line of sight for
Kraus, though. Possibly another minute.
As soon as he can
track a target long enough, Klappert fires a burst at the advancing
infantry. The closer tank almost immediately fires a high explosive shell
at Klappert’s position, and the inexperience gun crew reacts poorly. For
almost 10 seconds they are completely silenced, and it is only the
presence of Lamp that gets them working their gun again.

“More Americans are visible.
Klappert is just about to begin firing. Heinrich has already begun
bombarding them.”
At about the same
time Heinrich begins firing shells into the area that seems to be a main
axis for the America infantry. He seems to be shooting well, but the
effects are uncertain. The Americans do not seem to see him; at least, if
they do, they are concentrating upon the machine gun.
Meister’s
re-deployment continues; perhaps I SHOULD have ordered them to regroup
forward, rather than in the town. Hopefully Ploebsch will soon be in a
position to fire at any tanks that might come against the center.
Bahr still reports no
movement to his front, and I begin to wonder. ARE the Americans putting
all their force against my left side? If they do our positions will
quickly become untenable. If Bahr does not see anything in the next couple
of minutes, I will begin to draw him back toward the town. His group will
be needed.
