ORDERS FOR SEVENTEENTH MINUTE

I have reached a decision. The situation is now hopeless; Bahr’s remnants are stranded along the road, and Thieser is likewise cut off in his house. Both Schafer’s and Meister’s men have no route to disengage. The enemy tank near me is in position to fire at any of Meister’s men who move. Also, the only route Schafer could take to disengage from the US infantry he is fighting now is probably visible to that same tank. It is effectively astride the only route I can see for my men to get out of the deathtrap Riesberg has become.

For these reasons, I am going to ask the American commander, who is currently on the second floor of the building I just entered, for terms of surrender. I am certain that further fighting will only lead to needless further deaths on both sides.

My men have fought, and too many have died on both sides, in a battle that is part of a war that my country cannot win.

“Surrender.”
