ORDERS
FOR FOURTEENTH MINUTE
Bahr’s heavy squad is still trying to run to where their platoon
leader is located, and I see no reason to change orders now.
Machen will shell a house that
contains a US squad that is firing on Bahr, while Meister’s two
squads deployed forward will also assist Bahr.
Eymer is to leave his building and
move back one building, taking a path that will hopefully keep him out
of the enemy’s sight until he is ready to fire his gun again. My HQ
section will be there shortly, and should help this movement proceed
more smoothly.
Hermanns must seek cover again, as
he is the only anti-tank defense Schafer has.
ACTION
IN FOURTEENTH MINUTE
Well, after the last few minutes,
the events of this one are disheartening. Firstly, the US infantry in
contact with Schafer prove that they are still combat effective, as
they break from their cover and charge forward yet again. The fire of
Meister’s heavy SMG squad, along with Eymer’s machine gun team, are
not enough to halt the new assault. Quickly Schafer loses the remainder
of a squad, and Hermanns is killed as well. The remainder of
Schafer’s platoon, plus the survivors of Lamp’s, Kraus’ and
Heinrich’s units, are separated from the enemy by only a dozen meters
of woods. Schafer’s existence is again threatened.

“The Americans are again pressing forward against Schafer’s weary
platoon.”
Eymer, after firing at the enemy
rushing Schafer, loses two more men to a shell from a Sherman before
getting to the first floor of the building. Two enemy infantry squads,
despite their heavy losses, are running full speed up the road, and
will soon be upon Eymer. This presents a serious danger; they will be
behind Meister’s platoon, blocking his route out of town.

“Enemy troops are nearing Eymer’s building, presenting a block
on Meister’s retreat path.”
Machen fires several shells at the enemy he
can see, but does no obvious damage.
But by far the lowest point of this
minute is the confirmation that I made a grave error with Bahr’s
platoon. The enemy infantry on the road appear to be the survivors of
several squads that were bloodied earlier, as they are all low in
numbers, and do not appear to operate in a concerted manner. However,
their combined fire is enough to kill both of the men in Dietrich’s
anti tank team, cut two of Bahr’s squads to nearly half strength, and
leave Bahr as the sole survivor of his HQ section. Bahr, together with
Thieser and two of Meister’s squads, do great damage to the
Americans, but it is not worth the almost certain annihilation of
Bahr’s entire platoon in the next few minutes. This is a mistake that
I will be unable to forget for a long time to come.

“Bahr’s men face a large enemy force, and are cut off from any
possible help.”
I no longer believe that this battle will end
in anything other than the surrender or total annihilation of my
company. We had a chance, but our failure to destroy even another enemy
tank has made all else for naught.
